The fastest and most versatile way to use Verdn is in conjunction with Shopify tags. By creating and using 'impact tags', you can essentially side-step the requirement to re-visit the Verdn app every time you want to add impact to new products, and you can also do completely novel bulk-operations.
This guide will explain how to set up the feature, and then cover the most common use-cases.
Creating your impact tags in the Verdn app
Important Note: You first define your impact tag names within the Verdn app, and then apply them in your Products menu.
To get started, you need to navigate to the new 'Impact tags' menu. From the Products tab within the Verdn app, press the small arrow to reveal a new option called "manage impact tags"
The impact tags page has a few key elements:
- Some information near the top regarding usage
- A list of created tags, including how many products on your store are currently using each one
- A 'create new tag' button in the top right
Note: An impact tag can only be deleted when it has 0 active products.
When creating a new impact tag, you first choose an impact type and amount, and then choose a name. As with other tags, avoid spaces: e.g.'ocean-plastic-1' instead of '1 kg of ocean plastic'
Once you've set up all the tags you'll reasonably need, you can shift your focus over to the Shopify menu within your Admin dashboard.
Using the 'impact tags' within Shopify's Products menu
1. Applying impact tags to products
If you are new to Shopify or using tags, there are resources to help you, but essentially you can either:
- Add a tag to a single product, by clicking into a specific product and adding it to the menu box on the right hand side, or:
- Add impact tags to products in bulk.
For this latter operation, you can select the products you want from the Products list, and then click 'Options' --> 'Add tag':
At this point you will be presented with a box, and in here you need to type out the name of an impact tag that you have already defined in the Verdn app:
Products that have their impact defined by a tag, display in the Verdn app like this:
2. Bulk-remove and bulk-change impact
By using impact tags, you can bulk-remove impact. To do so, you select the products you want, and then you press 'Options' --> 'Remove tag', and then you type out the name of the impact tag.
Note: Products who have had their impact tag removed will appear as 'deactivated' in the Verdn app.
Similarly, you can bulk-change impact by adding an extra step on the above operation. To bulk-change, you need to first remove any previous impact tags, and then assign another.
Important Note: Avoid assigning more than 1 impact tag to a product; it may cause unintended behavior.
3. Automatically adding impact to newly uploaded products via a CSV
If you upload products to Shopify via CSVs, you can add impact tags in your tag column, just like you would any other tag. When the CSV gets processed, impact will automatically be assigned to you products. As noted before though: the tags you write into your CSVs must be defined in the Verdn app beforehand.
