Summary of Coralive.org
Coralive.org works to protect and restore healthy oceans through a variety of projects including coral reef restoration, environmental monitoring, and educational programs.
When it comes to their restorative and educational work, Coralive.org takes a holistic approach. They always collaborate with a range of stakeholders, ranging from local communities, grassroots organizations, private sector companies, and governmental bodies, to achieve sustainable, long-lasting results.
Coralive restores coral reefs by building underwater coral nurseries in close proximity to damaged or threatened reefs. These nurseries are small metal tables, measuring around 1.3x1.3m in size, upon which Coralive will tie down between 100–120 small coral fragments. Over a period of a few months, these fragments will grow into small colonies, each around 15cm in diameter. When considered large enough to not be mulched by trigger and parrot fish, these small colonies are out-planted onto the existing reef where they begin the process of restoration and healing. One nursery table is able to repopulate 25m2 of reef. The process is analogous to reforestation; over time, the out-planted coral will attract and support more fish, and the ecosystem will rebuild and become more resilient.
Coralive.org has projects around the world, including in the Maldives, Seychelles, Madagascar, Jamaica, and the Philippines.
